Engaging Nurses in HIT is Critical to Its Success

By Susan Kreimer, MS, contributor
Feb. 5, 2010 - As federal funds begin to revolutionize health information technology (HIT), nurses will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing electronic medical records. Many are already on the cusp of making computerized reform a reality, and some are even finding new career opportunities along the way.

"It's great to see resources flowing to this area. This will help the industry make significant strides in getting electronic health records implemented," said Joyce Sensmeier, MS, RN-BC, CPHIMS, FHIMSS, vice president of informatics at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

While nurses with informatics expertise will be needed to lead these, those at the bedside should be trained in using the new technology.

With this technology, there would be an advantage in the part of the nurses because it would be easier for them to reach out to other departments and doing their documentations would also be a lot easier. However, could this advantages outweigh the possible disadvantages that it could bring to the nurses and to the patients as well?

  2. If it is the quality care were talking, I don't really favor having to rely too much on technology and let it intervene to the way we are supposed to care to the patients. If it is about making the nurses' jobs easier, I would go for it.(.....)

  3. there is a big advantage to nurses but being too much dependent on it is not good.nurses should still not forget their role to patients.

  5. I think we should not rely on techologies only. Yes, it is helpful in accomodating a large number of patients but if quality of nursing care is the issue, I think technology could lead nurses away from their patient. :)

  12. i think the true job of a nurse is to be at the bedside and give quality care to the patients... i think the advantages of this new technology in nursing is being outweighed by its diadvantages especially in terms of doing our main job as a nurse! :)

  13. The nursing profession stands to benefit from their hands-on feedback on what works and what doesn't, with the goal of ironing out glitches and enhancing usability.

  14. Technology is really an advantage and a big help to make our jobs easier but we should not only rely on it because the true sense of being a nurse is outweighed.

  15. ...Technology would be a disadvantage if the nurses will just rely on it.
